The New Yorker's A to Z of NY Food: E is for Egg Cream

E IS FOR EGG CREAM! This foamy beverage has neither egg nor cream in it. Why is it called an egg cream? I have no idea! Maybe it once contained egg and cream. Maybe something was lost in translation from the possible original Yiddish. I do know Lou Reed got it right when he sang in Egg Cream, his tribute to the drink: “ When I was a young man, no bigger than this / A chocolate egg cream was not to be missed / Some U-bet's chocolate syrup, seltzer water mixed with milk / You stir it up into a heady fro / Tasted just like silk.” This classic is from @russanddaughters Cafe, the younger sit-down sibling to the appetizing store that’s been open since 1914! Share your E Food/Drink photos and tag them with #TNYeats so the world can see. #newyork #food #eggcream Photo by @Jamespomerantz
