The New Yorker's A to Z of NY Food: G is for Greenmarket

G IS FOR GREENMARKET! Since July 17, 1976 when 12 farmers put up a few stands at 59th Street and 2nd Avenue, New York’s Greenmarkets have grown to become an important part of the city’s food identity. There are now 54 Greenmarket farmers markets throughout the five boroughs. From just-picked, perfectly ripe tomatoes to new potatoes still cool and damp with the soil from which they were pulled, Greenmarket goods help remind me of where my food comes from and the importance of the farmers who grow it. New York’s Greenmarkets have made farm to table cooking possible outside of restaurant kitchens by bringing the seasons’ best to the rest of us.
